I remember when I was a little kid and my grandmother tried to teach me how to knit. I don’t know if it was the fact that I was under 10 years old, or the fact that the thread kept on getting stuck and all I managed to create were a bunch of knots!
I definitely enjoyed spending time with my grandma, but in the end she was the one that ended up finishing whatever I had started. My patience was short, but I liked to see the finished pieces. Everyone used to say how relaxing it was but I never was able to get that experience.
It’s been years since I picked up a needle, but this summer I asked my sister to teach me how to crochet. The first thing we did of course was to drive over to a Michael’s and we bought the right needle and 2 balls of yellow yarn. We figured two would be enough for me to create my master piece of a blanket?. I couldn’t believe how easy it was in comparison to my previous experience with knitting and also how much I was enjoying it! Of course those two yarns were not enough for my super blanket, so I had to go back again to the store and buy more in order to continue with my project.
You might wonder why I see the experience of putting together a blanket as a healthy experience. When you sit behind a desk for more than 8 hours a day and you spend most of that time looking at a computer, attending meetings and reviewing documents, at the end of the day the experience of crocheting a yellow blanket brings so much peace to the mind as well as to the soul. It allows you to relax your brain and activate the right hemisphere of your brain which allow you to be creative. The right side of the brain also is responsible for our intuition as well as our holistic thinking.
That being said, I hope you pick up a relaxing hobby that can boost your right side of the brain and of course let me know your thoughts on your experience.
